Introduction
Today
we will discuss the digital revolution, how technologies have evolved
during the years, and have impacted our lives.
Everybody probably
agrees that what started this revolution is the creation of the
internet is the main tool used behind most of the amazing
innovations we see these days.
Internet Users
Internet
became of the public domain in the 90s when only 0,5% (2,8 million) of
the population has access to it. Over the years this number went
quickly up and today we have 4,5 billion people that can assess to
the internet (59% of the world population).
When we look at the
regions where the majority of internet users are we see that Asia
is at the first place with 53% of the users then we have Europe with
16% and North America with 6%.
These numbers are luckily to change as many third-world countries are evolving and should
soon be able to access the internet.
Most Used Devices
Nowadays we use many different devices, the most popular are
smartphones as they are easy to carry and can connect us wherever we are.
The second most popular devices are laptops, they are
not as popular as smartphones because they are quite heavy to carry and require a Wi-Fi connection to access the internet.
Tablets are the third most popular device, some people prefer them
because they include functionalities of both smartphones and laptops.
How people search for information
One of the main reasons we use the internet is to search for information
that can relate to work, a studying product, a product or service we
want to buy, or just general facts.
Search engine websites have always been the main channels used to search for information and the most used websites are Google,
Bing and Yahoo.
Lately, social media have also developed under this aspect by providing quite a lot of information and the most used platforms are
Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram.
What People Buy Online
In the past few years shopping online became really popular and today
we have thousands and thousands of people that buy from the internet. The most popular categories are fashion appeals, toys & hobby products, and
electronics & media products.
The reasons why shopping online became so popular are:
Convenience
People can easily go from one website to another to check prices and find amazing deals.
Reliability
Compared to the past, shopping online is a lot more reliable thanks to the introductions of review and secure payment systems (i.e. PayPal).
Delivery
The deliveries got a lot faster as we have websites like Amazon that deliver the day after or even on the same day.
Video Consumption
Thanks also to digital devices we have seen a great increase in
online video consumption. For example in the UK in 2020 we reached an astonishing number of 47 million digital video viewers.
There are multiple reasons why people watch online videos and the most common
are: to be entrained, to learn or peruse on a hobby, or just to find out
general information.
Both younger and older generations watch online
videos as in general people think that videos are easier to follow
and provide quicker information compared to traditional means like
books, radios, and magazines.
Customers Trends
On average nowadays we spend 4 hours per day using our devices and
it’s easier to be influenced by a new way of thinking and new trends.
Some of the most discussed trends we have seen in the last few years
regard sustainability which is the importance of preserving our
planet. Because of this trend, people are now more careful about the
products they are buying and how they could impact our planet.
Another popular trend regards veganism, with more and more people
switching to a plant-based diet to preserve their health and the planet.
